Tough Times
By: patcook | October 8th, 2009After winning their first 4 games in a row, Genoa started a tricky set of games against Juve with a draw. They have since gone on to lose to Udinese and Valencia, but got back on track with a win over Bologna.
Now Genoa face Inter, a match that could provide a lot of confidence for the run in to the winter break.
After going three games without a win, including the heart breaking loss to Valencia, Genoa might have been excused for going off the rails a bit. However, they put in a good performance against Bologna despite their history of travel troubles and now have some confidence again ahead of the match with Inter.
Inter have dropped points in their last two away games (1-0 v Samp and 1-1 with Rubin Kazan(Who??)), so their is call for optimism. Ignoring their “away” game against Milan, Inter are averaging 1 goal a game in their away games (although the sample size is admittedly small atm).
Genoa manager Gian Piero Gasperini criticised the clubs transfer policies this week claim the club had a “mid-term” approach, where as he believed the club could have built a squad to challenge for Serie A this season.
Hopefully the outburst doesn’t affect the players and Genoa can get the job done this weekend.
On a side note, who was surprised to hear of another Juve player getting done for drugs? It was a Juve drug scandal that led to the wire taps that revealed the Calciopoli scandal. I guess once a drug cheat, always a drug cheat as far as the old lady is concerned.

Genoa will still finish in the top six of serie A standings. The club has the talent to do so.
But what many people forget is that this club is:
a) still very young and inexperienced
b) they have succumbed to many injuries this season
c)they are returning to European play for the first time in 17 years. The experience gained in last year’s championship will help. However, the resource management for the Serie A, Europa League and TIM Cup competitions is something that must be learned by the coaching staff & the teams’ players.
I think that many of Genoa’s injuries came from the fact that the team had to play numerous high caliber matches in shorter periods of time than they were used to (hence increased fatigue, hence the increase in the number of injuries).
Upper management always knew that the club would not win the Serie A trophy this season. Preziosi claimed this after the third week of play, and Gasperini is making his statement to reduce the pressure on his players. The managers know that this is a transition year for the team (to learn to play numerous competitions and to lead the path to greater things to come).
When I see that the teams’ core of Zapater is 25, Palacio 27, Criscito 23, Palladino 23, Bocchetti 23, Kharja 26, Tomovic 22, Acquafresca 22, Ranocchia 21, Esposito 23, Socratis 22 and I am not quoting the rest of the young players bought this year; and that all of these players are obtaining numerous minutes on the pitch in key situations + competitions; I am not too worried about the Vecchio Balordo’s future aspirations.Anyhow, we just lost two road games and sit 5th in Serie A, with a better record than at the same point last season. There is no need to worry.

Vecchio Balordo Fan,
The one thing i would point out is that a lot of the youngsters you point out as “the teams’ core” are on loan or co-ownership and there is no guarantee they’ll be here next season let alone into the future. Perhaps why Gasperini has more immediate targets

Pat, I do not see how a club can jump steps before challenging for a Championship. Teams who took the Grifoni for granted last season are now taking them more seriously. The schedule that this club is facing is also something that they are not used to. They were on a two week break and now they’ll have to play the 17th, 22nd, 25th and 28th and the 1st (that’s five matches in two weeks). The last time they went through a sequence like this was the final minute’s loss to Udinese (where the team had no gas left in the tank).
Even Udinese, last year had a setback when they competed into the later rounds of Uefa Cup.
Now, with more reflection; on the topic of Gasperini’s comments (and to somewhat join your views) I think that Gasperini also made his statement so that Preziosi will seek reinforcements in january (provided that the club can make it through the europa league group stage round).

youre right when you say they can’t “jump” steps, but i think Gasperini is also right when he points out that a lot of the big clubs are weak atm, particularly Milan, Roma and Fiorentina. So third is def achievable and with some luck they could push juve and inter.
The comments were probably a bit of mind games with the pres for whatever reason. I just hope it doesnt upset the team and i also hope that its not a sign of Gasperini laying the ground work for an excuse to move on

As they say, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you really really lose.
Today’s loss somehow wouldn’t seem quite so bad if Inter could now just actually WIN one CL match. But that may be asking too much of them and “the Special One”.
