L’Rossoblu Faces Slavia Praha
By: patcook | December 1st, 2009This post was written by Vlad, enjoy…

So it’s off to the Europa League next as we face Slavia Praha in need of all 3 points to keep in contention with the top two in our group (Lille and Valencia). We are in group B with 6 points from 4 matches, level on points with Valencia, and only 1 point behind Lille, who we beat last time 3-2 thanks to Giuseppe Sculi…
Last time Genoa faced Slavia Praha was on the opening day of the Europa League, winning comfortably 2-0. Let’s hope we can get the same result tomorrow, especially since our confidence is so high after the resounding 3-0 derby win against Sampdoria.
“Genoa have not won in their last four European away ties, with their last UEFA club competition victory on the road a 2-1 success against Liverpool FC in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals on 18 March 1992”, ouch… But if there was a better time than this to break that curse, it is surely now.
Team News
Houssine Kharja is out for six months, but other than that we are ok on injury worries. Slavia have a clean bill of health as well (Zdenek Senkerik is suspended though) , and will probably be fielding their best side against us as they need to win the game against us and the one against Lille, and hope other results go their way. On the other hand I don’t know if Gasperini will do the same, but one thing is for sure we need to win this game if we want to qualify, we have to create our own path to the last 32 and not expect Lille to beat Valencia and Valencia to draw us. What I am trying to say is that we need to field our best squad too. The hosts head into the game inspired by their 3-1 triumph over Brno at the weekend, courtesy of a hat-trick from Rudolf Skacel, damn…
Lineups “aka” what we should field against Slavia: Amelia, Moreti, Biava, Bocheti, Criscito, Milaneto, Zapater, Rossi, Paladino, Crespo/Flocari/Sculi, Palacio.
Quotes
“We have to leave the derby celebrations behind us and concentrate on the match in Prague,” said Genoa midfielder Francesco Modesto.
“The team is going through a good spell and we want to take advantage of this.
“We know we face a difficult match in Prague but we are all really motivated to get a victory on Wednesday.
“The Europa League has been a great opportunity for all of us to showcase our talent and our ambition remains to go as far as possible in this competition.”
Prediction
3-1 for us with Palladino (twice), and Crespo netting the goals. And what the hell, Smicer for Slavia! Forza Genoa!

3-1 sounds good to me! But I like Criscito for one of those goals.
Forza Rossoblu!!!!

Im not massively confident about this one. Away form has been a real issue for Genoa for a few seasons and the buzz of the derby victory might go against them.
They could go out against Slavia full of confidence, but they could also go out mentally drained.
Im betting on a narrow Genoa win

-

ps, Samp knocked out of Coppa Italia in dying minutes by Livorno… excellent.
Have Genoa caused another lean patch for samp through derby supremacy??

-

I’ve always been an optimistic type of person, and today we could not have faced an easier opponent away from home. I agree that our away form hasn’t been great this season, but Its the Europa League, and it sounds like Crespo really cares about this competition (Uefa.com).
Forza Genoa!!!!!!
Ps: Sampdoria sucks balls.

very close game so far
possession split 50-50, very few shots from either side

-

with Valencia winning we desperately need to beat Slavia

-

They just hit the post, Gasperini put in a “B” side against Slavia, and it shows.

-

probably a good idea, although id like to see Genoa make a real go at winning the Europa League

-

The Goal.tv commentator keeps calling Phashpolopulos Socrates, he says it is easier!?

-

I’d like to see paladino on right about now.

-

if scores stay as they are, genoa would have to beat valencia in the last round in Genoa.
not an impossible task, but not an easy one either.
I think even if we win today we’ll need a win on the last day with the valencia-lille result today

-

a draw against Valencia would be good if Slavia beats Lille. But we cannot rely on other teams to help us out, and what I cant get out of my head right now is how much of an imbicile Gasperini is right now, either he doeswn’t care about the europa league, which is sad because I don’t think we have a shot at another trophy this year.

-

Palladino for mesto, thank God…

-

we do have parma and lazio coming up in the league. their two midtable teams that we could be battling for european spots come the end of the season so theyre basically worth double.
i think Gasperini’s focus has always been on climbing the league as quick as possible.
i think thats why there is tension between him and the directors

-

Well… OK climb up in the league, but at least qualify for the last 32 of the Europa League.

-

no, i do want to see us get out of the group stage too, but i can kinda understand gasperinis thinking

-

ok we need to win against Valencia but by what scoreline? does 1-0 work? do away goals count? cuz it was 3-2 for Valencia before.

-

any scoreline, we are only 2 points behind Valencia

-

o ya, so even if we won today we still had to beat Valencia.

-

well, depending on Lille, but basically yeh
