Genoa versus Parma – A Champions League Playoff?

By: patcook | December 6th, 2009

It might be too early to claim that either Genoa or Parma will be able to sustain the level of form to break into the top 4 and win a Champions League spot, but with Parma sitting in 4th and Genoa a point back in 6th, both sides have the chance to further that cause.

Parma have only just returned to Serie A after a year in Serie B. In 2007-08 Genoa beat Parma 1-0 at home and Parma beat Genoa 1-0 at home. Parma might be a flash in the pan this season, often one of the promoted teams make a good start but eventually fade away, but they’re definitely in good form and have a strong enough team to be a real contender.

Parma’s danger men in my opinion are Bojinov and Paloschi. The two strikers have four goals a piece and are a nice mix of experience and youth, physical ability and skill. They also have Cristian Zaccardo, back in Italy after his German sojourn, and midfielder McDonald Mariga. In fact, across the pitch they are a great mix of experienced and youthful players, much like Genoa. Italy Soccer Serie A

Parma have been a mixed bag on the road with 2 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses. They concede a lot of goals away (13 goals in total, 5 times they’ve concede 2 or more on the road), so Genoa might have a chance to run riot. However, Parma’s last away game was against Fiorentina and Parma won 3-2, so defence will still be important.

Genoa rested most of their first team midweek against Slavia Prague so they should be rested and ready to go this weekend in what will be a most intrigue encounter on a weekend that has already caused so much controversy and rekindled faint hopes that Inter might not get a fifth title in a row.

On a side note, most of you who visit the other Serie A Offside blogs probably already know my opinion on the ongoing Balotelli drama. I just want to lend my voice of support to Balo again. 59076895
