Late goal by Diego Milito gives Genoa a draw against AC Milan

By: j | January 28th, 2009

While Beckhamania grips the Football media, a late goal by Diego Milito gave Genoa an important 1-1 draw against AC Milan at San Siro Wednesday evening. With the draw the Rossoblu unbeaten streak continues to nine matches with them holding a narrow one point lead on Roma in fourth place of the Serie A table.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Rossoneri started with intent and came within a whisper of finding the scoring sheet only a few minutes in with Kaká’s effort. Their attacking inspiration continued with Alexandre Pato tantalizing advances followed by Andrea Pirlo rattling the woodwork off a free-kick fifteen minutes in. For the first half hour Genoa looked in awe of the great club and were lucky to avoid being behind however that would change shortly. At the thirty-third minute the revitalized David Beckham show went in to high gear as the veteran Three Lion struck a perfect curling free kick around the wall and into the corner of the net. With five minutes remaining in the half Gian Piero Gasperini called upon Serbian international Boško Janković for Francesco Modesto and Genoa’s countering ability began to keep Milan with one foot back. Returning from the break with the one goal lead, the home side continued to pressure but had problems in the final third. Still Genoa’s scoring chances were modest through the hour and it appeared that Milan would lock down the match. However in the final ten minutes, Genoa’s crossing chances began to take mark and with three minutes remaining Raffaele Palladino’s cross was redirected by Giuseppe Biava to Il Principe who sent the equalizer into the net. Without another notable attempt the match concluded with a 1-1 draw.

Genoa returns to play next Sunday against my friends from beautiful Sicily, Palermo.

What’s been up with Palladino?..Has he been playing well this season at Genoa? I thought he was pretty good at Juve, but he just didn’t get that much of a chance.

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you were fans of punk/oi? There is an italian band I’ve always been a fan of, and they have a song titled Welcome to Genoa, it is sung in italian but has a few parts in English. The band is called Klasse Kriminale, bad ass shit in my opinion. Good showing out of you folks so far. Good luck in the CL Race, I hope somehow both you and us (Roma) make it.

Thank you all for joining me – very surprised to see comments

Stephanie, I do not think its an issue of his play being disappointing but that Genoa has a very well-rounded lineup and can rotate him with Boško Janković,Andrea Gasbarroni, Rubén Olivera and Giuseppe Sculli.

What is surprising to me is that with so many clubs looking for strikers, that there hasn’t been a serious run at any of these players.

Robbie ASR, thank you for your kind words and I am very glad the nonsense of the early part of the year in Roma has been reversed. Too great of a club to be far down the table.

Alex, thank you as well for joining in. It is good to hear from you. Great seeing Napoli up the table and hopefully this will continue. For the most part it has been a great year for Serie A and all regions are being represented well.

my pleasure! napoli are going through a really hard time at the minute 3 losses has really knocked the wind out of our sails. think we need a new manager he cant seem to get the team going we rely to much on the san paolo.

looking at how well genoa have done and then looking at the table i have to say that serie a is surely the most competitive in the world? you have the top 4 then you have lazio, palermo, genoa, napoli, fiorentina all battling for europe not to mention udinese and sampdoria who are just having rough patches. then you get cagliari and catania who are doing well its crazy how much quality is in the league! but genoa have really impressed me this season some quality football gets played
