Genoa miss out on day of opportunity
By: j | March 1st, 2009
In a grand day of opportunity, when champions rise to the occasion, Genoa did not answer the call and played to a scoreless draw against Sienna. Without a doubt credit is due to the sheer brilliance of Sienna, much maligned for their stature in the table, for solid display of defensive resolve. With the draw the Rossoblu hold on to fifth in the table but miss a chance to draw level to AC Milan who lost to Sampdoria.
After an early run for the Tuscan home side, Genoa woke from their slumber and began to apply a morsel of pressure. However with each Genoa effort going forward the Bianconeri responded and grew in confidence. Slowly the counter disappeared and Gian Piero Gasperini wisely knew his side was been played into disadvantage where they would be draw into an over commitment.
At the restart Genoa’s pulse rose and both Diego Milito and Serbian international Boško Janković threatened near the hour but their offerings were dealt with handily Sienna’s superb ‘keeper Gianluca Curci. With fourteen minutes remaining Raffaele Palladino came in for Boško Janković and his inspiring play was evident immediately. As the clock ticked down the former Juventus man shook the posts with a drive from the right side of box. Still without a goal, the match spiraled into a worldwide of activity with late efforts by Diego Milito and Domenico Criscito but each fell short and the afternoon concluded with a nil draw.

Wow, I just don’t understand how your team didn’t take advantage of this match.
As was discussed in the previous section, Siena does play great defense at home, but Im rather surprised for the scoreless draw.

As you said, Siena plays defense. Mostly because they have absolutely no offense.
Slipups happen.

J and alessio, I’m sure that we all stand on equal footing regarding Genoa’s next fixture…..hopefully a win against inter, correct?
Genoa will be doing all everyone a favor, especially Juve, with an up-coming defeat against inter.
I hope to see that, not because I hate their fans, but because I dislike Mourinho. I have the strongest impression that once he leaves Italy he will be thrashing the teams, the cities, the fans–all and everything about Italy in general. Oh well, just some personal thoughts that I wanted to express.
Bring on the game preview……

Couldn´t agree with you more, Pauly.
Genoa can definitely win this weekend, and if so, it´ll re-open the Scudetto race. I´m looking forward to it.

Hell yeah Ale! I wouldn’t mind seeing any other team, except inter, win the Scudetto again.
I think that the odds are definetely stacking up against inter, as they have Genoa, ManU, and then Jeventus correct? Anyways, Juve hasn’t been that impressive as of late, but man, they better take advantage of what’s around the corner and surge ahead.
