Fortune falls Genoa’s way
By: j | March 14th, 2009Fortune fell Genoa’s way as they narrowly defeated Cagliari 1-0 in Sardinia with a late goal by Rubén Olivera. To no surprise Massimiliano Allegri’s Cagliari force put forth a compelling side and if truth be told, the victory should not be hailed in a celebratory manner as the hosts were certainly deserving of sharing points.
After fifteen minutes Genoa came within a whisper of scoring as Boško Janković provided Diego Milito a high probability opportunity but the final touch went askew. Following that chance each side showed extraordinary discipline and true scoring chances were minimal at best. However the match took a dramatic turn as six minutes before the half the Sardinian side would be forced to play a man down when Andrea Cossu received his second yellow card in a very dubious call. The Rossoblu struggling attack lacked not only intent but any sort of tactical plan as Cagliari easily handed their advances and create those of their own. Slowly momentum shifted and Genoa found its way through the top Sardinian defending unit. After a series of heroic saves by the hosts ‘keeper Federico Marchetti, Genoa found a morsel of magic with five minutes remaining as Raffaele Palladino sent a cross that Rubén Olivera headed in to claim the 1-0 lead. A late effort by the hosts came close but only close and Genoa left the beautiful island of Sardinia with the victory.
With the victory Genoa climbs to fourth place in the table and waits for Udinese next Saturday.

I’m hoping Genoa can stay in fourth. Still a long way to go though.

As you well know, luck has a lot to do with this game and even ugly wins, or lucky wins, are all that matters at times.
Neil made a good point, as there are still ten games left for each team before all is said and done. It will certainly be really interesting to see how it all adds up, as Genoa sits pretty in 4th, while my team ROMA is still clinging right behind with a slew of decimating injuries, and Fiore (rightly so), falls out of the picture. It will be a fight to the end, and the best team, with the strongest desire to succeed, will certainly overcome.

I still think 4th is a bad idea for Genoa, and per recent discussion, Serie A. They would be in worse shape for the CL than Fiorentina was in this season.

i dont know genoa seem to be alot more united and have a stronger mentality than fiorentina. if they get in the champions league, keep the players they have and just add a couple of quality signings i think they could do alright

I agree with Alex, Genoa seems like a more cohesive and determined crop of players that plays better than Fiore. If they had the chance to qualify for 4th, they would do much better than Fiorentina.
Now, to be honest, I understand what Alessio is saying. Undoubtedly, the bigger teams in our league (inert, Juve, Milan, and Roma), would play and represent Italy better in the Champions League. It’s the fact that these teams have better quality players and above all, experience.
Genoa would suffer at the hands of other top-notch European teams, but I still think that they would represent Italy better than Fiorentina.
The big question is whether they will be able to hold to 4th this season, as I still think that Roma will pull through as the pressure mounts.
Nevertheless, I would someday love to see Genoa get a big slice of the cake! Once Inert or Milan fall on their faces and other teams, e.g., Genoa, get to go to the big dance

I don’t really care about the pride of Italy in the CL, as far as the unity goes, Genoa has a great starting XI but the bench options aren’t good enough to sustain a 3-trophy campaign. If Genoa consolidated a Uefa cup spot (Which I think they easily will) and played a solid campaign, then they could start to build experience and a strong team capable of playing in the Champion’s League, but much more importantly winning that 4th spot in Italy while doing so.

I think j should have a say on whether he thinks Genoa are ready for a 4th spot or not (Maybe a post dedicated to the subject?). It would be interesting to hear his thoughts- although i personally think that a UEFA cup spot is better suited for them at this stage.

Yeah, it’d be interesting to see what a Grifone fan thinks.

Nicoli – great point and to be honest my opinion would have differed a few months ago. Of recent they have played like a side not confident of flying too high. The swagger has gone qand n its place a softer more timid group have appeared. While they are ready for an expanded Europa League, the upper echelon would feast on this. Please let me know your opinions on the matter.

Hey guys. As you probably know, I’m the Julian who runs the Italy WorldCupBlog (click my name for a link), and I was hoping to get some help from you guys for an upcoming series of posts. I’m asking each writer for a serie A club to email me, if you’d like to, and name 2 or 3 players who you believe should get called up to the Azzurri. Not players that are already a fixture, but maybe young guys who haven’t gotten a call up yet, or older overlooked players who deserve one. If you could email me, that’d be awesome. Much thanks.

j, i think that the Europa league would be well represented by Genoa…many say this isnt a worthy cup yet Udinese is the only Italian representative in Europe and they have alot riding on them for a victory on Thursday. If Genoa were to qualify for the champions league they would have to do some major reinforcements…which i think can’t come in one season…as we saw with the viola…experience is key in Europe…something i think that Genoa needs at an intermediate level first in the Europa league than at the champions league.
According to wikipedia, you guys were in the uefa cup in 92 an did the double to liverpool…replicating such a success to any english team at that level will be a huge stepping stone for the champions league for the following season.Posted from

Nicoli (ASR), thank you for your comments and I think you are correct about Genoa’s involvement in the Europa League as opposed to the Champions League. This transfer season will be a very interesting one for Genoa and all of Football as they deal with a turbulent financial environment. A lot will be decided on how they react to higher bids, presuming they come, for Diego Milito.

Yes, I agree with J in that that will be the biggest problem for Genoa, to hang to their current crop of players in order to maintain some sort of cohesive unit. The elemnt of playing with each other is what builds confidence and team chemestry.
As I’ve read before (I forgot where) Milito seems to be open to a possible move to inter, where he would get a bigger pay check, name recognition, and CL play. In addition to playing with the numerous other Argentinians in that team.
Yes, but that does seem right, the EUFA cup spot will be great for them to get their feet wet once again…..
Buona fortuna!
