European bound

By: j | May 18th, 2009

Genoa’s remarkable transformation from Serie B side to European football was completed Sunday as the Rossoblu played Chievo to a 2-2 draw. With the result Genoa is firmly locked fifth in the table with a five margin above Roma, with remaining matches against Torino and Lecce.

After a resounding start for the home-side, Chievo took the surpise lead ten minutes before the break as Luciano’s provision from the byline to the right was volleyed in by Giampiero Pinzi from close-range. A goal down now Genoa raced back with Boško Janković creating a number of chances but each came up short. Genoa was fortunate not to trail by two at the break as a late surging run ending with a goal by Sergio Pellissier was erased due to a peculiar handball. However without further mark the match went to the break with the side from Verona holding a one goal lead. Eight minutes after the restart Genoa had its chance as the spot was pointed to as Mario Yepes was adjudged a penalty. Diego Milito strode up and confidently drove the ball into the net bringing the faithful to their feet realizing European football nears. With nineteen minutes left, Rubén Olivera struck a free-kick to the upper right corner to give Genoa the 2-1 lead. Thoughts of the victory ended with five minutes left as Sergio Pellissier headed-in Simone Bentivoglio’s corner to square the match at two but that certainly did not hold back the celebration as Genoa has secured its spot in Europe.

Gian Piero Gasperini has done a fanatstic job at Genoa. As has Sienna’s Marco Giampaolo and Sampdoria’s Walter Mazzari,Pasquale Marino of Udinese. When you’ve earned three point in the Seie A you have fought hard for them. As have Luigi Del Neri and Cesare Prandelli. Its a tough place to earn a living.

And i havent mentioned Mourinho,Ancellotti,Spalletti and the poor bastard Ranieri who was fired today.

It blows my mind how Genoa has manages to slip up and lose so many points recently. I hope things better with the last matches, but I was expecting a stronger finish by Genoa.

bravo on qualifying for europe i will definitely be cheering genoa on in the europa league! i spoke to a couple of people i met the last time i was in naples and they said a lot of neapolitans are very happy for you as well i cant remember the last time there was such a friendly relationship between 2 clubs.

its a shame motta and milito are leaving although im sure floccari and acquafresca (if the reports are true) can chip in with a few goals. any idea who your going to replace motta with? with the money you have made from inter, maybe a cheeky bid for d’agostino? i hope you sign someone quality (as long as you dont hijack the cigarini deal).

who is your sporting director as well? along with fiorentinas they are the best in italy you seem to just bring in quality for a good price as well

    Dear J:

I hope you have the chance to read this post. I truly want to thank you for the beautiful and soul touching words that you have written in the past, as well as now.

I had no idea you were such a busy writer, but it doesn’t surprise me that you did, since your love for “this game” surpasses everything we might be able to even consider.

If you do not mind telling us, where will you be writting next year? Im sure some of us would still like to read your words and or support your efforts wherever that may be.

    Grazie grande uomo!

Thank you all for your kind words. It is much appreciated and I have enjoyed blogging for Genoa immensely.

Pauly, my first course of action is a large series of camps I offer in the sport for players and coaches in the summer. I have four stops in Italy, two in France and one each in Portugal and Spain. It makes for a very busy late June and July but I wouldn’t miss it for the world

As far as writing, I have a number of options but nothing really reflects my decision with this blog. I apologize if my comments were at all construed negatively but I think it is healthy for a turnover so that someone else who feels passionately about the club and the sport can pen with their own style. I might also inquire about writing about another team, one that I have been associated with for a few decades so I will need to discuss that with the company and see how I can do that in a anonymity. With respects to next season, I have published a number of books at present and looking to put the finishing touches on two right now. They are both well past due but I get very picky when it comes to the final words so we’ll see how that works out. I am not sure if I’ll be spending more time blogging or just print work but something we’ll see.

Thanks again everyone – time to post now.
