a decision that will be regretted

By: j | May 21st, 2009

Such a telling time of year, Aprill with his shoures soote has now passed and the Footballing world as begun its panoramic fade to black as the tale concludes. Hero’s have risen that will forever be remembered with a glint eyed vision in time.

The people of Genova will forever remember the year of 2009 as the time their little Rossoblu climbed to the top of the Footballing world. In only a blink of an eye, their story went from the rapturous delight of returning to Serie A to going toe to toe with titans of the sport with Il Principe leading the charge. A simple story really, the hero rides in and plays out the hopes of dreams of the townspeople that only a youthful heart could have painted with such rich colours. Yet in the final act, when the moment is about to take the step towards lore that will be remembered through time, fate jumps in and washes the canvass to black as Diego Milito has been be sold to Inter Milan for gold, trinkets and everything else that means nothing to those that bleed for this club.

Across the press-wire it was announced in straight, efficient and unsuspecting fashion that Genoa president Enrico Preziosi has agreed to sell Diego Milito and Thiago Motta to Inter Milan, adding that Sergio Floccari would be jettisoned in from Atalanta. Rumours continued that Robert Acquafresca would be making his way to the Genoa after being on loan to Sardinia’s Cagliari. Straight, efficient and to the point as well as lacking a morsel of journalistic review, questioning and anything else you would hope for by the modern media.

To some, this deal will make “sense” as the rumoured replacements are certainly quite capable and the cash flow will provide the club the ability to bolster its depth. However there is a stench to it that doesn’t sit right as when the league champion sweeps in before the curtain has dropped to purchase your best player. There are no remedies, the game has bought and sold itself many a time now and backroom deals are not simply maddening to the fans but equally raise an suspecting eyebrow in how these are orchestrated.

To live life without regrets, vivere senza rimpianti, is something I cannot imagine Genoa management being able to utter.

I think you guys will miss Motta more than Milito. Floccari can be even better than Il Principe if you keep all the people around him. Just my 2 cents.

I am super bummed about Inter giving up Acquafresca. Since no one consults me on these deals, though, I guess I will just have to put my faith in Branca and Mourinho and hope that they know what they are doing. Doing well at Genoa is one thing, doing well at Inter – where every single move you make is under constant scrutiny by a host of hostile sports news outlets – is entirely different.

I will keep my fingers crossed that it all works out.

“Doing well at Genoa is one thing, doing well at Inter – where every single move you make is under constant scrutiny by a host of hostile sports news outlets – is entirely different.”

That sentiment will make fans of other clubs want to do violent things to you, especially when you suggest that their club’s star player can’t cut it at a good team. This isn’t England, Italy has real talent in every squad.

It is not that I dont think they cant cut it at a “good team” only that the scrutiny of players is different for a Genoa player than it is for an Inter play. For some, it doesn’t matter and they do just peachy. For some, though, they crumble under the added pressure of having so many eyes, so many critical voices, pick apart their every move – on and off the pitch. It has nothing to do with how skilled they are on the pitch or how talented they are. Look at Adriano.

point taken, johonna, but i dont think it will be an issue for either milito or motta. motta played at barca, and i think the spanish press is just as pyscho as the italian press. milito is 29, and i see him being too mature for anything approaching an adriano type of collapse. although this genoa team did seem to collapse under the pressure of new expectations… although i think thats due to the motivational skills of their coach.

alex, I dont know a darn thing about Spanish football (or their press) so I will take your word for it.

I guess I didn’t take age into account – I hope you are right all around. Both Milito and Motta have shown that they are more than capable on the pitch. It is just that looking at how Mancini and Quaresma (both good for their previous teams) worked out for Inter have me a little spooked.

Beautifully said! I completely agree with your sentiments, and I think that Genoa got the worse of the deal.

The owner exchanged two players that already had chemestry with the rest of the team, and who were quite successful, for two other players that, although talented, might not make the same impact on Genoa. I think it was a risky deal, which only sets Genoa back as these players still have to come and gel with the team. I hope for the Genoa Tifosi that next year won’t be a transitional year.

Thank you all for stopping by.

Ricci, I agree with you regarding Sergio Floccari but I’m concerned about the mix of players and also the timing of the deal. Certainly an exciting time for him because he jumps into European football. I’ll have to look through my Calabrese recipes to make sure he has a good welcoming party : )

Johanna, you bring up a great point of Robert Acquafresca and if he is definitely coming to Genoa that will be great for the club.

Alex W, said in any other way you are absolutely correct of the Spanish media. It barely is “journalism” and is one element that few recognize. If you’re new the area (i.e. coach or player), it can cause extraordinary stress as you’re not sure how to use the media properly and shield yourself from endless rumours. As far as Genoa’s late season swoon, it was more a by-product of planning and tactical play. You are right of the technical merit in Italy and due to this you need to be able to adjust tactically more than Genoa showed late. I hope that makes sense.

Pauly, as always nice to hear from you. This was a very odd deal to say the least and unless further information is provided, it appears to be solely financially motivated. I can certainly understand this during this very difficult period but in my opinion it needed to be investigated and reported as such by journalists. And please feel free to contact me via that email.

I don’t think that this deal is purely financially motivated, although it would be naive not think that the money had to be right for any of this to got through.

Genoa received some portion, or all of Acquafresca, who is rumored to leave for loan as soon as he gets to Genova. Genoa also receives 2 players on loan – a defender and a goal keeper. And Inter helps pay for another player – I haven’t seen a name – whose rights stay with Genoa for 1 or 2 years and then revert back to Inter.

And with the money from the sale, Genoa bought Floccari.

It seems that all was done above board, that is, that Inter asked Genoa’s permission to speak to the players concerned. And although Genoa lose 2 players, they get 4 players directly from Inter, and cash to buy a fifth.

It looks like we can now add a veteran name–Crespo–to the youthful duo of Floccari and (maybe) Acquafresca that are already lined up. The miraculous return of il Principe to Marassi quickly erased from memory the loss following last season of Borriello. We won’t know for several more months, but maybe Preziosi and Co. know what they’re doing.

Milito and Motta will be missed, to be sure; they’ve become true icons of the club. But there’s reason to believe that 2009-2010 will be yet another step forward for the Rossoblu.

Cali Pete: I still think that it’s hard to digest the fact that Genoa management gave up two productive, and proven players for some youtful, relatively unproven and unknow players.

and yes, if any one can read Italian, here is the report that says Crespo is a step away from being a Genoa player:

I dont think that either Acquafresca or Floccari are unproven or unknown. Crespo has all the potential to be a Pippo-esque super sub. He has a great attitude and I wish him all the luck in the world.

For those that do not read Italian, Channel 4 has also picked up the Crespo story:
